Discover the Best Craft Supplies for Wood Cutout Projects
I love helping creative people create fun & functional home decor that brings color and joy to their home. I'm so excited to get to know you and craft alongside you. This article will provide you with a good list of supplies to get when getting started out. Remember, you can always add to them slowly.

Paints
Acrylic paints are a great starting point because they're inexpensive and easy to find. My favorite brands are Folk Art Multi Surface, Delta Ceramoat and DecoArt Americana.

Chalk paints are another fun way to use color. They often come in larger containers, but you can use sample pots or Walmart's Hello Hobby line which is pretty good quality.
Acrylic paint markers are great for small pieces and accents. Posca is a terrific brand but a bit spendy. My preference is Tooli Art Pens. You may also try Painters brand from Walmart.
You can use a variety of things for a paint palette. I love to use inexpensive, disposable trays from the Dollar Tree where you can also pick up plastic palettes and water cups.
Brushes & Applicators
Make-up wedges are great for applying paint to mini-signs.
I cut mine in quarters. Pick up a bag at Walmart or Dollar Tree.
Assorted brushes. They do not have to be expensive. Grab an assortment pack. A good angle brush is great for getting tricky spots.
Baby wipes are great for getting a farmhouse or rustic finish with your paints.
Adhesives
Art Institue Precision Craft Glue is my preferred glue for gluing together wood pieces, especially small fiddly bits.
I also love Gorilla Super Glue Gel for small pieces and embellishments. It bonds quickly so make sure your piece is where you want it!.
Misc Bits
320 grit sandpaper is handy for distressed techniques and smoothing off the occasional rough corner. Using sandpaper sheets is much easier on small pieces than a sanding block so swipe some from your hubby or pick up a pack for yourself.
I use Mod Podge for many techniques so pick some up. It's great for decopauge and sealing.
If your project is going to be outside, like a door hanger. It is imperative that you seal the project to protect it from the elements. My favorite sealer is Minwax Finish Spray for Wood in Satin finish.
You can add a variety of embellishments to your wood creations. Use up things you have on hand or pick out some favorite bits and bobs at the craft store.
- Twine
- Ribbon
- Scrapbook paper
- Printed napkins
- Fabric strips
- Buttons, beads, jingle bells or artificial flowers. - anything to add a little extra pizazz to your project!
